Professor Wole Soyinka peered through his distraught binoculars at Nigeria's hazy firmament, and reported: "a wasted generation". If you don't understand, "wasted generation" means our children who would rule us tomorrow. But is anyone weeping? We have killed that maudlin 'shame' .
Did Soyinka exaggerate? Was he indirectly self-adulating because he won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1986? He was despondent! He would love other Nigerians to wear that garland, but where is our future? Far away from books, causing President Goodluck Jonathan to holler: Bring Back The Book! early in 2011 because our children have dumped them. Get a winnowing fork and visit, at random, a garbage site to confirm just one drop of Soyinka's tears. Remember; he had bemoaned our Season Of Anomie. How can a book-phobic generation rule our future? Only if civilisation regresses into early age.
