Kenya: CJ Appoints Bench to Hear Vetting Case

6 September 2011

Chief justice Willy Mutunga has appointed a three-judge bench to hear a case seeking to stop vetting of judges. The case will be heard by the newly sworn-in judges Grace Nzioka, David Majanja and Vincent Odunga as their first task when they take office. The new judges are preferred because they are not going to be vetted afresh and as a result whatever decision they reach, conflict of interest will not arise.

The chief justice's direction arose out of a case filed by Dennis Mang'are seeking to declare the Vetting of Judges and Magistrates Act illegal.
