Uganda: Bribery Breeding More Accidents, Says Masaka Traffic Officer

7 September 2011

Masaka — Traffic officers who accept bribes from taxi drivers have greatly contributed to rampant road accidents in Masaka District, a police boss has said. The District Traffic Community Liaison Officer, Ms Jesca Ndimugendawa, said there are so many notorious taxi drivers who violate traffic laws but due to corruption, are left to walk free only to commit more crimes.

She said in so doing, drivers have continued to speed and overload along Masaka/Mbarara, Kyotera and Kampala highways leading to accidents. "It is a big challenge to some traffic officers who allegedly accept bribes from taxi drivers," she said, adding, "Taxi drivers have a habit of dropping money at the police road blocks whenever they see a traffic officer stopping them."
