Nigeria: No Case Against First Lady - EFCC

The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, yesterday cleared the air on a report which alleged that the sum of $13.5 million was recovered from the first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, in 2006. She stressed that at no time did the first lady have a case of money laundering to answer, contrary to speculations.

Debunking the fraud claims, Waziri said that the report in question was the handiwork of mischief makers bent on slandering the first lady. Internet whistleblower Wikileaks had published US diplomatic cables alleging that the EFCC in September 11, 2006, seized $13.5million from Mrs Dame Patience Jonathan at the Lagos airport when her husband was the governor of Bayelsa State.
