When we teach African history in our universities, we often divide the continent into five regions North, West, East, Central, and Southern Africa. Given that this is a huge land mass, this division gives our students an option to choose which region they wish to specialise in. However, this division excludes certain countries.
Where, for example, would you fix Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia in North or East Africa? And where would you put the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central, East or West Africa? To which region do Eritrea and Djibouti belong?
