Tanzania: Give Teachers Their Dues

Whatever else we do, we should avoid another dispute between teachers and the government. We do not need another nationwide strike that disrupts learning.In all fairness, the teachers deserve their dues. There is no need to politicise their demands, which include salary arrears and outstanding leave pay.

The Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU) speaks of Sh48.6 billion in outstanding payments, Sh25 billion being salary arrears. The union has volunteered to work with the government to verify the claims over the next two months. This goes to show that TTU is willing to cooperate with the employer in finding an amicable solution.
