Freetown — When I tampered with some newspaper headlines on Tuesday and Wednesday, it was not much of a surprise to me to read reports about the recent political violence in the Kono District involving two senior elders of the ruling All People's Congress (APC) party of President Ernest Bai Koroma. One version of the report had it that supporters or thugs loyal to Vice President Samuel Sam-Sumana assaulted the bodyguards of the Minister of Internal Affairs Musa Tarawalie when both of them were in the diamond-rich Kono District for the funeral of a well-known personality.
Certainly the contents of several newspapers were dominated by the maiden speech and apology of the SLPP Flag-bearer Julius Maada Bio in which he mentioned the need for an easy transfer of power come the crucial 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections at 12 O'clock sharp, as well as the expected role of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) headed by Madam Christiana Thorpe.
