Kenya: Eight Perish in Meru Grisly Matatu Crash

9 September 2011

Eight people died on the spot in a road accident along the Meru-Embu highway. Two others are admitted at the Consolata Mission Hospital in Nkubu. The accident involving a Unique Shuttle matatu and a lorry occurred at around 9pm at Kwa Muguna near Kanyakine Market. Deputy OCPD Mohammed Wako told reporters that those who witnessed the accident said the matatu, which was on high speed, veered off the road ramming into the lorry.

Wako said only two people survived the accident. "According to an assessment of the impact of the wreckage, we cannot rule out the possibility of the vehicle having been on high speed," said Wako. He further said they are yet to identify bodies of three victims. "We have confirmed that among the dead is a senior official of the Meru Level Five Hospital and another from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company Meru branch," said Wako.
