Kenya: Coal Mining to Start in Mwingi

Plans are underway to start mining in the coal-rich Mui Basin, Mwingi East district in Kitui County, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has said. Kalonzo said the tender worth over USD 1 billion has been won by a Chinese company. He said the project will not only create jobs but also transform the livelihoods of the people in the area. The investment will fast track development of infrastructure in the area and the neighboring regions, Kalonzo said. The VP made the remarks yesterday during a fundraiser for the construction of Kalimbui Mixed Day Secondary School in Tseikuru sublocation in Tseikuru district.
