Sierra Leone: Violence in Bo: Who's Telling Lies?

Freetown — As investigations into the violence perpetuated by supporters of the opposition Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) and the ruling All People's Congress (APC) party against each other in Bo city over last weekend continues, it is becoming clear that the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and other law enforcement agencies in the country will have a herculean task in their efforts to unravel the truth concerning whether the SLPP or the APC supporters should be held responsible. The spate of violence that happened in Bo last Friday is still an indication that Government needs to deploy more efforts to promote harmonious and peaceful coexistence in the country, giving that deep beneath the smiles on the faces of politicians in the country there lie deep seated deceit and hypocrisy over the level of political tolerance achieved so far since the end of the 11 years civil conflict.

According to the SLPP Unity newspaper in their Monday, 12th September 2011 edition, what happened in Bo last Friday was a calculated attempt to assassinate the SLPP presidential aspirant and flag-bearer Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio in Bo city where he and a large delegation of SLPP supporters had converged to express their thanks and appreciation to Paramount Chiefs and local authorities in the district and the Southern Region for massively turning out and voted for him during the last SLPP National Delegates' Convention. If it is true that there was a planned plot to eliminate the SLPP presidential aspirant from the political scene, then one stands to question the level of maturity that democracy in this country has attained
