September 8 was adopted in 1965 by the United Nation's Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, as a day to mark the World Literacy Day. The day is set aside to disseminate literacy awareness worldwide, especially among the world's illiterate community every year with a new theme.
Literacy, broadly defined by experts, is the ability of an individua to read and write short statements relevant to routine life and the capability of analytical understanding of the human condition.
