Kenya to Get EU Agriculture Funding

20 September 2011

THE European Union will grant Kenya 60 million Euros (Sh7.9 billion) over the next three years to to go towards credit to farmers, inputs and insurance all aimed at boosting agricultural activities. The funding is part of the Agricultural Commodities Programme which identifies key areas and crops that need to be developed in order to boost a country's economic situation.

According to EU representative Bernard Ray who spoke yesterday during a workshop on the ACP , Kenya will also receive further funding from a 45 million Euros kitty (5.9 billion) set aside for Eastern and Southern Africa countries under the same initiative. The extra funding will go towards financing development of cotton production in the country. "We picked on cotton because it is mainly grown by poor people and in arid and semi arid areas so if it is developed, this will boost their economic situation," explained Agriculture PS Romano Kiome.
