Kenya: Kieni DC Bans Alcohol Sale in Plastic Bottles

22 September 2011

KIENI West DC Abdi Mohammed has banned the sale of all plastic packed alcohol in the district. Mohammed, who was speaking during a meeting with over 100 bar owners from Mweiga area, said the law is very clear that from August all alcohol packed in plastic bottles will not be sold. The DC, who was accompanied by Nyeri Police boss Kirunya Limbitu, warned those found selling the alcohol in plastic containers that they will be arrested and charged in court.

He said some alcohol is packed in attractive plastic bottles but is lethal. Mohammed told the bar owners to sell only what is fit for human consumption. Speaking a day after a meeting with Central PC Kiplimo Rugut over the illicit brews, the administrator said the meeting with the bar owners is to put together a strategy which will ensure deaths from illicit brew consumption are prevented. Some 30 people have died in Central after taking illicit brews in the past fortnight. "The patrons in the bar today should not be deaths of tomorrow. We want to chart the way forward and put up short term and long term measures to ensure that not a single person dies over lethal brews," said Mohammed.
