Kenya: Lamu Rejects 6PM Curfew On High Seas

5 October 2011

Lamu residents are against a government directive that the high seas should be a no-go zone after 6pm, in an effort to fight off terrorism. The Lamu Council of Elders said the lives of residents depend on fishing which is done after sunset. A member of the elders council, Mohammed Mbwana, said residents should be involved in the search of the two foreign women kidnapped. "We are in consultations and will hold a briefing later in the day to give our statement over the issue," he said.

His sentiments were echoed by the Muslims for Human Rights who blamed the police of laxity in providing security at the Coast. Muhuri executive director Hussein Khalid said, "Besides the increase in thuggery, murder and extra-judicial killings, the recent abduction of two foreign nationals in Lamu county has raised serious questions about the security situation at the Coast. For decades, local communities have lamented about poor security services within the region but the police have ignored the cries."
