Kenya: Don't Sell Your Land, Coast PC Nelson Marwa Tells Squatters

14 October 2011

The government yesterday blamed squatters for their own woes at the Coast. Coast regional commissioner Nelson Marwa yesterday said government efforts to solve the squatter problem in the region are being hampered by the sale of land at the cheap by the squatters. "Majority of the squatters at the Coast sell off their land just after receiving title deeds or allotment letters to the pieces of land," said Marwa.

He said the squatters are easily convinced into selling their land on the cheap by rich individuals in the region. "A month or so after receiving titles, rich men come and dupe them into selling them the land claiming that they (squatters) will still encounter further problems in the furture. "The squatters then prefer to sell their land fearing the said problems. Thus they still find themselves landless and at some point go to the streets to protest," said Marwa.
