Uganda: Jazzy Tribute to the Legends of Soul

One of the most exciting things about live jazz is its spontaneity. It makes every performance, even with the same ensemble, set-list, and venue, different. For this reason alone, any show with Grammy nominee Gerald Albright, who just did the fourth edition of the annual Nile Gold Jazz Safari in Kampala, requires a police warning - it is always explosive!

But there is another reason why the ever growing jazz crowd in our rural city must this year have extra-kudos for the ever ebullient reggae-man and jazz, soul, and R&B enthusiast, Tsaka Mayanja who promotes this jazz fest. The main acts, Gerald Albright and Howard Hewitt of the great 1970s group Shalamar, were of course great. But equally sensational, if not more, were their vocal back-ups, Jermaine Paul and Selina Albright, daughter of the big man himself.
