Liberia: 'We Will Play By the Rules'

26 October 2011

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says the Unity Party (UP) will abide by the Liberian constitution in the event the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) boycotts the pending runoff election scheduled for November 8, 2011. President Sirleaf made the remark yesterday, October 25, 2011 when she appeared on the popular Truth Breakfast Show (TBS). The Liberian leader said the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Liberian constitution were the only referees in the electoral process and promised that UP would follow what the constitution says.

“We will play by the rules in the event where the CDC decides to boycott the runoff. I don’t think the constitution said that. It is a few group of people who are saying this, but I don’t think the larger majority of the Liberian people are in support of this,” the Liberian head of state said. She said the country has gone too far with progress in recent years and that Liberians were not prepared to see their nation going backward. The President’s comments come in the wake of growing fear that her main challenger, Winston Tubman, is planning to boycott the scheduled runoff, which some say might lead to serious constitutional crisis that could possibly see the country heading into another transitional arrangement.
