Human rights organisations in Nakuru have warned about the proliferation of councils of elders in various regions of the country. They termed the councils as outfits 'created by unscrupulous individuals to get money from politicians while promising them their community's support' and warned that such moves would end up polarizing the country.
The rights activists were speaking in a Nakuru during a forum organised by the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy and UNDP's Amkeni Wakenya initiative. Bunge la Mwananchi's Joseph Omondi said that the councils of elders were likely to push back Kenyans into tribal cocoons under the disguise of preserving their culture.
