Tanzania: Parliament Takes Mkulo, Ndulu to Task Over Falling Shilling

Dar es Salaam. A Parliamentary committee yesterday took the government to task over what it said were insufficient measures taken to halt the shilling's free fall and containing inflation. Finance minister Mustafa Mkulo and Bank of Tanzania Governor Benno Ndulu were grilled by members of the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee who expressed dissatisfaction with efforts to address the twin problems which they blamed for the suffering of many poor Tanzanians.

Led by the committee chairman and former Cabinet minister Abdallah Kigoda, the MPs faulted the slow response exhibited and also felt the time frame to respond, as expounded by the minister and governor, was not convincing.
