Kenya: Fireworks Cause Panic in Kakamega

The Asian community in Western province on Wednesday night defied the ban on fireworks while marking this year's Diwali by the Internal Security permanent secretary. Internal Security PS Francis Kimemia had directed that Asians could not be allowed to use fireworks following two grenade attacks by people suspected to be al Shabaab sympathisers.

But a senior police officer at the Western provincial police headquarters Gabriel Musau said the use of fire works had been allowed by Western PC Samuel Kilele and PPO Benson Kibui. "We have not received any circular banning the use of fireworks. It is a normal thing countrywide even Nairobi," said Musau.
