Kenya: Most Nairobi Roads Have No Lights

28 October 2011

More than half of Nairobi's roads have no lights, the city council has said. A kilometre of a road requires 33 streetlights. The council has only lit up 30 percent of the roads, said the city engineer John Mburu adding that so far more than Sh500 billion has been spent on the project. The Nairobi Central Business District boss Timothy Muriuki has blamed the upsurge of crime in the city to lack of lights.

Mburu said the council has put up lights in 80 per cent of the slums adding that by December 31 all the slums will have light. "We have ongoing projects worth Sh150 million that will make the coverage of the slums to 80 percent, but we need an additional Sh350 million that will see the city well lit at night, towards achieving a 24 hour economy," Mburu said.
