I must have told this little story before: Back in the late 1960s my wife and I and two friends were driving from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam. It was the worst time of year for such a journey, because the long rains had started.
A key bridge connecting Dar to its hinterland was down - but not for long, because the Safari Rally was about to use that road and so something was done as a matter of urgency. Some army engineers quickly assembled a Bailey bridge.
