Kenya: Heightened Security Evident As Nairobi Holds It's Biggest Race

Security was heightened to fresh levels for this year's Standard Chartered Nairobi marathon yesterday. The event passed off without incident. Participants, officials and supporters were screened outside the stadium perimeter and on entry to the Nyayo stadium gates with all vehicles permitted to the route and finishing areas searched by a combined force of Police, National Youth Service and private firm G4S personnel.

Police were on patrol on the course in addition to added race marshals who kept watch along the route as most residents who had no business in the marathon kept away. Most parts of the Nairobi remained deserted in the morning hours. The carnival atmosphere that has graced the event in the past eight editions was conspicuously absent this year.
