Nigeria: Adamawa Pilgrims Protest At Kano Airport

16 November 2011

Kano,Yola — Hundreds of pilgrims from Adamawa State, who just returned from Saudi Arabia yesterday protested over their alleged abandonment at the Mallam Aminu Kano Airport, Kano. Our correspondent reports that this is the second time within one week that Max Air plane is unable to land at night at the Yola airport due to lack of night landing facilities. On Sunday, a Yola bound Boeing 747 jumbo jet belonging to Max Air had a burst tyre while landing in Kano.

The pilgrims yesterday prevented a plane belonging to IRS from flying while saying that they would not allow any plane to fly until they are attended to. One of the pilgrims, Alhaji Amadu Arma Maude told Daily Trust that they cannot land in Yola because the lighting at the airport is under repairs, and that they were brought to Kano and dumped without any explanation. Another pilgrim, Hajiya Hafsatu Maiha said they were tired, and that they have spent all their money. Our correspondent reports that not all the pilgrims were involved in the protest as some tried to mediate between the angry pilgrims and officials.
