Kenya: Government's Tough Talk On Illegal Houses

THE government has vowed to crack the whip on individuals and institutions that flout the laid down National Environmental Management Authority regulations on pollution. This comes in the wake of demolitions by government forces on private residential quarters in the outskirts of Nairobi's Syokimau estate. The exercise, which began last Saturday, has elicited mixed reactions with unconfirmed reports indicating that Nema had warned would-be developers that the land in question is not for private constructions.

However, the owners of the properties, mostly palatial homes, have cried foul on what they termed as illegal destructions, and have vowed to seek for legal redress. Yesterday, Environment minister John Michuki called on local authorities countrywide to play their rightful role with respect to environmental management and strive to revive conservation efforts.
