Kenya: Syokimau Demolitions Stopped By High Court

17 November 2011

THE high court has barred the Kenya Airports Authority from carrying out any further demolition of houses and buildings in Syokimau on the outskirts of Nairobi. High court Judge Martha Koome gave the temporary injunction three days after the polic entered into the land premises with bulldozers to demolish the houses.

The demolitions are said to have taken place at the Kyang'ombe slums before finally moving to the middle-class Syokimau at the weekend. The residents, represented by three officials from Uugnani Settlement Scheme and Self Help, which has 1,800 members, said KAA illegally entered their premises and demolished their properties in disregard of the suit pending before the high court.
