"The results of the 2011 tourist season will be similar to those of 2002, the year of the attack against the synagogue in Djerba," said Mr. Mehdi Houas, Minister of Trade and Tourism, on radio Express FM.
Mr. Houas stressed the importance of diversifying tourism to avoid the seasonality of the industry: "We should promote new products such as cultural tourism and domestic tourism. That will make out of Tunisia the Switzerland of the Mediterranean or the Singapore of Africa."
The Minister of Tourism argued that 2012 will be a transitional year and that we have to bring tourism and trade back to the 2010 level.
Concerning rumors that Germany encourages European tour operators to promote Greece instead of Tunisia as a touristic destination, the Minister of Tourism answered: "this information is unfounded; soon there will be a joint statement by the German Ambassador to Tunisia and the Ministry of Tourism to clarify the situation."
