Kenya: Child Rights Abused At Police Stations

2 December 2011

CHILD Protection Units created in police stations across the country are dysfunctional and some have been converted into VCT centers by NGOs. The Kenya Alliance for Advancement of Childrens' Rights yesterday said the units are manned by people not trained in children matters. "The problem in protection of the children starts with posting people who do not understand international conventions and only relay on the Children Act to man the units," said Caroline Chebet, a child protection officer in charge of advocacy at KAACR.

Chebet said all the 14 child protection units established by the government across the country by Save the Child Finland starting 2006 are all dysfunctional. She said some have either been converted into VCT centers or are serving as stores for exhibits. Chebet spoke during the Western provincial Child Rights Network workshop at Kamadep Guest House in Kakamega yesterday.
