One Administration Police officer died on the spot and nine Kenya Defense Forces soldiers critically injured in separate incidents of landmine explosions in Mandera and Wajir on Sunday afternoon.

The military officers were travelling from Wajir to Mandera in a convoy of three when one land rover drove over a landmine.

Nine soldiers were critically injured in the incident and are currently undergoing treatment in Wajir district hospital.

Wajir District commissioner Kennedy Nyaiyo, who confirmed the incident, said military officers have thrown a security ring around where the incident occurred to net any suspect.

Earlier, an AP officer died on the spot and two regular police officers seriously injured in Mandera. The three were on a foot patrol near the Kenya-Somalia border.

The AP is reported to have stumbled on the explosive device.

North Eastern police boss Leo Nyongesa said the device lay along the Kenya -Somalia border line that separates Bulla Hawa of Somalia and Mandera district headquarters.

Mr Nyongesa said that security had been beefed up in the district and urged locals to give helpful information that may lead to arrests.

Arrangements are currently being made to airlift the injured officers to Nairobi, he said.
