Tanzania: NHC Wants Drop of Vat On Houses

Under fire from prospective mortgage clients and tenants over hiked unit prices of apartments and rent, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) is pleading with the government to waive Value Added Tax (VAT) which accounts for 18 per cent.

NHC Director General, Nehemia Mchechu who is accused of importing a banking culture into the housing sector, told tenants and prospective buyers of its apartments that VAT is pushing up prices unnecessarily.
