Egypt: Antiquities Minister - Sphinx Not Harmed By Groundwater

State Minister for Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim said that the groundwater under the Great Sphinx is only 4.5 meters deep, which does not affect the safety of the magnificent statue that stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt.

His remarks came during a tour of historical sites he made on Tuesday 13/12/2011 along with a number of antiquities leaderships.

The USAID funds a major project to study the impact of the rising groundwater level in the area surrounding the Giza Plateau and develop strategies to combat it, he added.
