West Africa: ECOWAS Condemns the Situation in Guinea-Bissau

The Chairman of the Authority of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State and Government, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has received with grave concern, reports of attacks on the Headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Guinea- Bissau, by a group of dissident soldiers.

According to a Statement from Dr. Reuben Abati, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the reasons for this unfortunate situation are yet to be fully ascertained, however, reports indicate that they are not unconnected with agitation for pay rise and rivalry within the military hierarchy.
