Rwanda: Young Motorcyclists Still Cause Most Traffic Accidents

At least 355 people were killed in road accidents between January and November 2011, according to the latest Rwanda traffic police statistics. Yet it seems that for the entire year, there will be a decline in the number of accidents, and casualties, compared to 2010.

And police say most of the road accidents have involved motorcyclists causing more injuries and deaths compared to other vehicles, a phenomenon blamed on the young age of the 'motards.' "Most motorcyclists are youth aged between 26 and 35, most of whom are very reckless and prone to committing most traffic offences resulting in fatal accidents," explained Celestine Twahirwa, the head of Rwanda Traffic police.
