Kenya: Consumers Pay Dearly for Mitumba Clothes

The cost of second-hand clothes, known as mitumba, has shot up, limiting availability in the local market. This even as the shilling strengthens against other major global currencies.

According to dealers, a strong dollar led to increased value added tax (VAT) at the port, which prevented traders from getting bales of clothes.
