South Africa: Festive Season Road Traffic Statistics - Individual Responsibility Key to Improving Road Safety

Minister of Transport, S'bu Ndebele, today released preliminary figures from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) for national festive season road deaths.

This festive season ran from 1 December 2011 to 10 January 2012. In total, 1 230 fatal crashes were recorded during this period, with a preliminary figure of 1 475 people killed. This represents a decrease from the 1 551 fatalities reported in last year's preliminary statistics.
