Mozambique: Dhlakama Insulted By Renamo Demobilised

Maputo — Men who claim they once fought for Mozambique's former rebel movement Renamo on Saturday insulted and threatened Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama at a public meeting in the northern city of Nampula - but left journalists covering the event wondering whether it had been staged to give the impression that Dhlakama is a moderate, under siege from extremists in its own party.

Renamo meetings open to the press tend to be highly disciplined affairs. But on Saturday, in the full view of TV cameras, former guerrillas jumped to their feet and accused Dhlakama of taking bribes from the ruling Frelimo Party in order to delay the nationwide anti-government demonstrations he had promised.
