Tanzania: Inflation Up As Energy, Food Prices Jump

Dar es Salaam — The annual headline inflation increased slightly to 19.8 per cent in December, from 19.2 per cent in November.

But some economists fear that any optimism may be misplaced because food and energy costs are expected to put more pressure on inflation. The power utility firm, Tanesco, last week raised electricity tariffs by 40 per cent. Inflation has been rising for the past 14 consecutive months--from 5.5 per cent in November 2010 and hitting double digits in June 2011 at 10.9 per cent.
