Nigeria: Kwara Abolishes Fees, Levies in Secondary Schools

Ilorin — Governor Abdulfatah Ahmad of Kwara State yesterday approved that all fees and levies in secondary schools in the state should be abolished. The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Communications, Dr. Muyideen Akorode, in a statement also approved the reduction of N50,500 from the fees paid by students of the Kwara State University (KWASU), who are indigenes of the state.

He said the gesture is one of the palliatives designed to cushion the impact of the increase in the pump price of petroleum on the people of the state.

Akorode added that henceforth, senior secondary school students in the state would be given 10 notebooks per session free courtesy of the state government.

"With this development, primary and post-primary education is now free in Kwara State. At the tertiary education level, Governor Ahmed approved a N50, 500 reduction in fees for indigenes of the state, who are studying at the Kwara State University (KWASU) with effect from next session. KWASU students are also to benefit from a new mass transit system", he said.

He said additional measures targeted at the larger population would be rolled out once the modalities are concluded.

The governor restated his determination to consistently implement proactive welfare programs to improve the well-being of the people of Kwara.
