Nigeria: FG Concludes White Paper On Visitation Panels

The Federal Government has concluded the white paper on the visitation panel for institutions, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, has said.

Speaking during her meeting with Rectors of Polytechnics and Provosts of Colleges of Education yesterday in Abuja she said the white paper would be sent to all the institutions for implementation next week as soon as President Goodluck Jonathan releases it.

The visitation panel is responsible for monitoring the activities and expenses of the institutions.

Rufai informed that the government was still working on moves to provide governing councils for the institution by the end of February.

On issues of convocations in institutions, she condemned the fellowships awards given to numerous dignitaries stressing that awards should only be given to peculiar people who have contributed immensely to the society.

Ruqayyatu also criticized the use of side attractions such as traditional dances, endowments launching, amongst others during convocation ceremonies adding that prominence should be given to the conferment fellowships to graduating student.

She urged the Rectors and Provost to follow due process during staff employment and awards of contract urging to be accountable and transparent.
