Zambia: ACC Responds to Paul Bwalya Over Irregularities at ECZ

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) would like to comment on the letter from Paul Bwalya of Avondale Lusaka published by the Times of Zambia in its edition of January 12.

In his letter to the editor, Mr Bwalya expressed disappointment with the ACC with regard to irregularities at the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ).

Mr Bwalya claimed that some issues, which he apparently did not mention, were reported to the commission but that there had been no response.

Contrary to Mr Bwalya's assertions, the commission has been investigating a number of irregularities at the ECZ.

However, some of the matters were submitted to other law enforcement agencies for their scrutiny as they did not fall in the ambit of the commission's jurisdiction while others were referred to relevant authorities for administrative action, which action has since been taken on some senior officials.

As such, the commission finds the allegations of non-action by Mr Bwalya unfounded. Had he contacted the commission on what the status of these inquiries was a position would have been given to him in confidence.

The commission would like to encourage Mr Bwalya to feel free to contact the commission in future to clarify any issues related to this and any other matters he deems fit's policy not to discuss in public details of cases under investigations or indeed any other case brought to the attention of the commission.

The commission doors are always open for anyone to follow up on matters that they might have reported in the past so that they are informed of the status of such cases.

The commission will continue to execute its mandate professionally without fear or favour.
