Kenya: Primary School Teacher Commits Suicide

A primary school teacher from Teso South district committed suicide yesterday. Eddy Amoni of Kamunuoit Primary School in Amukura was found dangling in his house. Area district education officer, Patrick Kitilit said Amoni could have hanged himself owing to domestic issues and stress. Kitilit said the teacher had come to his office a fortnight ago looking stressed due to his health condition.

Sources said the man was married with one child but his failing health saw him visit Bungoma and Alupe mission hospitals seeking treatment over an undisclosed ailment. The body was moved to Busia District Hospital mortuary as police launched investigations into the incident. Kenya National Union of Teachers Teso branch executive secretary, Deogratius Owaya said the death of Amoni was a big lesson to teachers that cutting short one's life is not a solution. "Stress in Kenya today is a bother to almost everyone. As a union we shall advise our members to restrain from activities that can lead to stressful thoughts," Owaya said.

Kenya started 2012 with sad news of primary school pupils committing suicide after failing in the KCPE exams. As many as eight children have committed suicide in Kenya since the new year started. Psychologists and psychiatrists say suicide is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode if the problem is not addressed. World Health Organization indicates that about a million people commit suicide annually. And for every person who dies, there are 20 unsuccessful attempts at committing suicide. Research has shown that 90 per cent of people who commit suicide have mental disorders.
