Friday's Supreme Court dismissal of the tenure elongation case filed by five governors of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has thrown the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into fresh rounds of operational bottlenecks as the ruling may necessitate last minute changes to already scheduled elections time tables in affected states.
In one, the governorship elections in Bayelsa State has already been scheduled for next month, February 11, 2012.
The commission as at the time of filing the report were still undecided on the next line of action.
"Until the commission takes a decision, the situation remains as they are as it relates to scheduled elections," The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu told LEADERSHIP on phone after the apex court ruling.
Checks at the commission's headquarters reveal that series of high level meetings are being held in the aftermath of the ruling to determine possible solutions to the present quagmire.
By the ruling, all the sacked governors are expected to hand over to the speaker in their state house of assembly, except in Kogi state, where the gubernatorial election was held and there is a governor elect.
Those affected are governors Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Ibrahim Idris (Kogi).
