The Minister of Trade, Ms Amelia Kyambadde, has urged various stakeholders to get involved in sorting the deficit in the housing sector through taking up available possibilities for all Ugandans to access decent housing facilities.
While handing over the sixth house in the Airtel Cribs and cash promotion, Ms Kyambadde said whereas the government is committed to enhancing household wellbeing through the extension of decent habitats, other stakeholders must chart out strategies and contribute resources in order to address challenges in the sector.
Housing deficit
Ugandans have in the last decade experienced housing challenges as a result of rapid urban population growth coupled with government's failure to off set long term solutions for sustainable sector growth.
Uganda has a deficit of about 550,000 housing unit with about 160,000 in urban areas. Kampala alone has a deficit of about 100,000 housing units.
Many companies including those in the banking, telecommunications and manufacturing sector, among others have come up initiatives that are targeted at sorting the housing deficit in Uganda.
For instance, Airtel Uganda, has through various innovations helped to sort out the deficit in Uganda.
