Somalia: Three Killed As AU Troops and Al-Shabab Militants Battle in Mogadishu

Mogadishu — At least three people were killed and more than that number have been wounded in a heavy battle took place overnight in the lawless capital, Mogadishu, residents said on Sunday.

The fighting which was between pro-government soldiers backed by AU peacekeepers and Al-shabab militants linked with Al-Qaeda broke out in north of Mogadishu's Karan district after the rebels attacked at government and AMISOM military positions, killing three innocent civilians, reports said.

Witnesses told Shabelle Media that both warring sides exchanged heavy and slight weapons, including artillery fire during the fighting, leading local villagers to flee from their houses in fear of a possible fierce combat between TFG, AU forces and Al-shabab fighters, whom promised on Saturday to double their guerilla-style attacks and car bombs in the capital, Mogadishu.

Neither Somalia government nor Al-shabab has made any comment about the fighting so far.
