Former Secretary General of the Arab League and presidential candidate, Amr Moussa, denounced the proposal of a "consensus candidate for president" as it contradicts the basic principles of democracy.

The people reject the idea and wish to democratically elect a president through fair and free elections, under their supervision, Middle East News Agency reported as said by the presidential candidate.

Moussa called in his popular conference in Damanhur for everyone to save the nation as it faces challenges incomparable to any other time in history. Warning against the dividing of Egypt, Moussa also called for people to join efforts to prevent destructive schemes, coming from within or the international scene.

Commenting on the recent proposal to extend the transitional period, Moussa insisted that such a move will only hurt Egypt, indicating his desire for a president to be elected after the parliament is complete followed by the drafting of the constitution.
