ECOWAS Sends 150 Election Observers to Senegal

Abuja — ECOWAS has deployed 150 observers for the 26th February 2012 presidential election in Senegal. The Election Observation Mission, headed by former Prime Minister of Togo, His Excellency Koffi Sama, comprises members of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise, representatives of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, the ECOWAS Parliament, as well as legal and civil society electoral experts from West Africa.

Others are representatives of the National Electoral Commissions of Member States, ECOWAS Ambassadors and experts from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Accra, Ghana. The ECOWAS observers are expected to meet with the National Electoral Commission, government officials, security agencies, diplomats and civil society organizations in Senegal. Some 5,080,295 voters were registered for the presidential poll in the 14 regions of Senegal.

Mr. Sama also headed the ECOWAS Observer Missions to the November 2010 presidential election in Burkina Faso as well as the presidential and legislative elections in Niger in January and March 2011, respectively.

Under its Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, ECOWAS is required to send observer missions to Member States conducting presidential elections as part of its determination to ensure democratic convergence across the region.
