The Grand Imam of al-Azhar Dr. Ahmed al-Tayyeb met on Tuesday 28/2/2012 with a delegation representing the forewing affairs committee of the British House of Commons.
During the meeting, the Grand Imam criticized the negative role of the European Union saying it did not honor the aid pledges to Egypt and that political stability needed to be supported politically.
British ambassador in Cairo James Watt, who attended the meeting, said there is a campaign of lies against the stance of the United States and the west which describe them as unwilling to see political and economic stability achieved in Egypt.
He said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has offered to extend a loan worth $3 billion to Egypt but the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces does not want to overburden the coming generations with these debts.
The IMF offers a new package of aid worth $6 billion at the time Egypt needs $12 billion, he noted.
The Grand Imam said Islam does not clash with democracy so long as it is put in its humanitarian context.
On the Syrian crisis, al-Tayyeb said foreign plots are currently carried out against the Arab region.
