When he debuted the album that brought out ever green hits like 'Denge Posse', Friday Igwe aka Baba Fryo changed the ghetto music with another follow-up job, Notice Me, which equally made waves. But due to some circumstances, he literally went out of circulation. In this exclusive interview with Anthony Ada Abraham, he spoke on why he has been mute for sometimes and other sundry issues.
When we were coming up in Lagos, the name we Baba Fryo shook Naija as a whole to the marrow but for some times now, you have been quiet. What is the reason behind this?
I know a lot of people will be surprised as to why I have been quiet for sometime now. This is because it has been so frustrating. When we are busy working, some other people do not allow us to reap the fruits of our labour.
There is no doubt that you are a 'bros' of Nigerian ghetto music, why did you stop after just two albums?
I did not just stop...I released a third album but the recording company delayed its release for over three years. It is just like stopping someone from doing his legitimate business for over three years; you know what that means.
If you guys who we consider to be keepers of Nigeria kind of music are keeping mum, don't you think the other genre will override you people?
There is nothing new that the new artistes are enjoying that I have not tasted. They are not working for me, they are working for themselves. So you should know that they can never override me.
There is none of your songs or tracks that did not make sense, which made lots of people to enjoy your songs. What is the way forward, looking at ghetto music... is there any hope?
Well, the ghetto artistes should improve on their style, the tempo of their music and lyrics. We have continued to have brain-drain in music and the American style is quite different from ours. If we want to be like them, then we should make sure our lyrics and vocals are up to standard. They should look up to America's music tempo.
Are you married?
For now, I don't want to involve my family in my business, maybe later I may do that.
What are you doing at present? Is there hope for upcoming ghetto artistes who look up to you guys for guidance? Because it seems that when some well-known ghetto artiste releases one or two tracks , that is the end...What is the reason. Should we expect your return soon?
I am still working on a new thing, by the special grace of God it will be out soon.
Your's is no doubt a name that rings a bell among many people. Who would you love to feature among the present crop in Nigeria's entertainment industry?
I do not think of featuring any artiste for now; maybe later
You have lots of fans and friends particularly in Abuja, what do you have for them and what would be your message to upcoming artistes?
To all my fans, friends and well- wishers... I am still alive! Expect something new and good. I love you all! For the upcoming artistes, stop encouraging pirates in Alaba Int'l. I wish you all the best.
