South Africa: Msunduzi Municipality Must Account for Damages

press release

The alarming figure of R3,5 million claimed by a resident whose eye was injured due to a stone that flew out of a brush cutter and struck his eye, R400 00 claims from council employees and residents for inconveniences caused by power shortage and uncovered manhole pothole injuries is a shock and totally unacceptable ("Potholes and Power failures set to cost Msunduzi a lot in Claims"- 5 March 2012).

The continuous inflation of good roads without potholes and proper service delivery is a concern. Having a municipality pay R4,8 million insurance claims is unjustifiable. Power failures are a sign of poor service delivery and claims for potholes are sign of subserviced roads. These claims should and could have been prevented if roads and service delivery was up to standard.
