Rwanda: Demands for Accountability At the Retreat

Over a week ago I was one of the invited journalists to the Umwiherero retreat, the annual ritual of accountability by senior government officials, to the Head of State.Tunisian

None government officials, such as senior members of the private sector, too regularly sit in on the retreat. This year, the first time I ever was invited to one of these Umwiherero, there were a few other journalists from neighboring countries, Uganda and Kenya to be more precise. What they were witnessing is not something they are used to in their countries. The President was asking cabinet ministers and other big officials what they had been doing all year, and you could see from the looks of concentration on most of their faces that they were quite concerned how their answers would go over.
